The first step is to be patient and know when to use the gaff. It is not always easy to get the fish to cooperate when using a gaff. The first thing we recommend is allowing the angler to fight the fish until it is exhausted. When a fish is getting tired, it will usually come to the surface rather than swimming away. You should never catch a fish while it is still active. It can cause the gaff to rip out of your hands or cause you to jump off the gaff!
