If you have a good compass, you will always find your way back home. This is the most trustworthy and important navigational instrument that can be found anywhere. The only spot on earth where it is of no use is in close proximity to either of the earth's magnetic poles, but who would dare sail so close to either pole? It does not require any electricity, and it does not rely on satellites or electronic components in any way. Unfortunately, despite its use, it is used well below its potential.
A compass is infinitely more appealing to me than any electrical system. Even the most advanced chart plotters can't compete with the reliability of a good old-fashioned compass. When it comes to navigating any sea, I have a lot greater confidence in utilizing a compass rather to any of the other chart plotters that are available.
