The crank handle is often located on one side of a spinning reel, which is also the case with an ice fishing reel. In most cases, the reel is designed to be used with either the right or left hand, although certain models allow the handle to be attached to either the right or left side of the spool.
Spinning reels can range in size anywhere from 1,000 to around 30,000, although ice reels are typically on the smaller end of the spectrum (1,000-2,000).
The internal gears of spinning reels translate the user's movement of the handle over a full 360 degrees into several rotations of the spool. This is what makes it possible to swiftly wind in the line on the reel.
The term "gear ratio" refers to the rate at which this takes place, and ice fishing reels often have a gear ratio that falls anywhere between 5.2:1 and 6.2:1. Each full revolution of the crank handle results in either 5.2 or 6.2 revolutions of the spool being driven.
Ice fishing reels are always constructed with lubricants that are able to function well in extremely cold conditions.
