Historically, most fly fishing combos included equipment that was, at best, subpar. In the bad old days of fly fishing, fiberglass fly rods with subpar fly line and a fly reel that would surely break the moment an angler hooked a large fish were standard.
But now things are different. These days, most fly fishing combos include a high-caliber rod, reel, and line, with the exception of those available in discount retailers. Anglers today have a fantastic variety of combos and fly fishing outfits to pick from; but, "junky" combos are still available and can do the job for kids chasing panfish at the local pond.
The abundance of fly fishing combos available, however, brings its own set of challenges. The question is, what should I get? Equally vital is preventing second thoughts from cropping up a year after purchasing the bundle.
