Worse than anything else is a line that isn't tightly wrapped. Casting distance is reduced, tangles are more likely to occur, and the line may be damaged, requiring replacement sooner than if the reel had been spooled under tension.

To prevent this, wind on your line through your fingers while wearing a finger stall glove or on a towel so that it is under stress before being wound onto the spool.
With the proper amount of line in the reel, you may throw further, use less line overall, and extend its lifespan by avoiding tangles. Since fluorocarbon mainlines tend to be springy and bounce off the spool if there is no strain on them, this piece of advice is all the more vital.
