Maintenance and wear are unavoidable aspects of using a fishing reel, just as they are with any other piece of gear. It will ultimately be necessary to replace moving parts, the bail springs will eventually wear out, and the bearing caps may become loose and go overboard.
The different parts of a reel, are:
- Spool: Your fishing line is wound onto the spool here. The spool does not rotate as it would on a bait caster; rather, it oscillates back and forth.
- Bail Arm: The half-circle of wire that is either silver or black in color and serves as the bail arm is what the line is threaded through.
- Body: The gears are contained within the body of the reel. Graphite, steel, and various alloys are the components that go into their construction.
- Side Plate: The reel body has a side plate attached to one of its sides. Primarily, it serves as a point of access for cleaning and greasing, in addition to providing access to gears for the purposes of maintenance and repair.
- Gears: The power that allows you to crank the engine comes from the gears. To summarize, you crank the handle, which in turn changes the gears, which in turn spins the pinion gear, which in turn rotates the rotor.
- Rotor: A spinning reel's component that does the turning is called the rotor. When you spin the handle, it is the rotor that moves in both an oscillating and rotating motion.
- Drag: During a struggle with a fish, the drag is a collection of washers that allow you to manage the pressure that is being applied to the spool.
- Handle: There is no ambiguity regarding the function of the handle. Strong yet surprisingly lightweight, machined metal handles are the hallmark of a quality product.
- Anti-Reverse Switch: Every spinning reel has an anti-reverse mechanism, which is normally controlled by a specific anti-reverse bearing.
- Line Roller: The line roller is a component of the bails arm assembly that is in charge of directing the line onto your spool.
