Learn to Fish: If you don’t know how to start fishing then this article is very interesting for you. But an experienced angler may also discover some useful tips here. So: parents who want to teach their child (ren) to fish can bring their offspring in here and, if necessary, have them read along.

Preface

First and foremost, you need to know which species you want to fish because there are of course a huge number of specimens, and the method of fishing is adapted to your choice.

***

This is different for predatory fish, carp, and roaches. You will learn what fishing equipment you need, where to go fishing, and how to catch these animals. If it is really your first time, you can start with the first paragraph.

Learn to Fish (Fishing)

For the complete novice (Fishing)

Here I mainly want to give tips to people who want to teach a child to fish (if they are interested of course!) If they still want to practice sport fishing, then there is a nice hobby waiting for them! You will have the most positive result with children who like to be outside in nature.

***

Take your child, grandchild, nephew, niece, etc. for a walk along lakes, rivers, and pools and see how it reacts. Take a look at someone who is fishing and explain a little. Watch fish that come to play on the surface of the water.

Little Fish at the Water Surface (Fishing)

Children who have an interest in fishing will want to start fishing immediately when they get to the water. (What were we like when we were kids?) That’s why it’s important to do as much prep work at home as possible. Teach them that safety is very important and as long as they are small and careless to wear a life jacket.

***

They also need to be able to handle a fishing rod, make a simple knot, and how rig the line and cast carefully as well. You can learn the latter in a park or a large backyard, for example. In a park, you also have to remind them again that pedestrians can pass and that they must be careful when they cast the line.

Life Jacket (Fishing)

If possible, you can prepare the entire rod and the future angler only has to find a good fishing spot, attach the bait to the hook, and cast the line.

***

Also, take the weather into account and provide the fisherman with the necessary protection such as appropriate clothing, food, and drink, solar oil, hat, shoes or boots, sunglasses, etc.

***

A child can quickly get bored, especially if it cannot catch anything. Have respect for that and do not oblige them to keep fishing because otherwise, the interest may suddenly have disappeared completely. Above all, they should have fun and be able to learn it at their pace. It is, therefore, better to go fishing as close to home as possible. Especially in the beginning.

***

Start by catching small fish such as roach or whitefish because the most important thing for a child is that it has a bite … He/she will discover the pleasure of catching a larger specimen later. And it’ll be as proud as it can pull out a little fish.

***

In a quiet phase where the fish is not biting, you should still try to focus on the child so that it does not lose patience. Tell him / her more about sport fishing. If the child is quite emotional they might get anxious seeing a fish floundering in the grass … So keep the landing net close and tell them you’ll be ready with your camera to take a nice snapshot.

Landing Net (Fishing)

Also, make sure that the future fisherman respects nature and the other fishermen and when they are older than 16 years must have a fishing license. If they go fishing in a park, they must also obey local rules.

***

And most importantly, speaking of a teacher who is already an experienced fisherman: don’t overwhelm the child with too much information. It has enough with its most essential basic equipment and does not have to learn to make various knots, for example. Stick to a trusted fishing spot and let the angler develop further.

***

It is also better to start fishing on still water or a very slow river. That way the float stays in place and you also know exactly where to feed. Also, places, where there are, for example, lily fields or reed collars, can lead to a good catch because there the smaller fish feed and hide from the larger predatory fish. They also like to stay at jetties or wooden posts in the water. Also learn to move so little and not to make a sound, because fish are quickly suspicious.

Learn to Fish – The material for learning to fish (Fishing)

  • A fixed rod of 5 to 6m maximum: with such a pole you can already catch many types of fish and even larger ones such as perch, bream, roach, rudd, colblei
  • A landing net
  • Bait, maggots, etc …
  • Fishing gear (preferably fully prepared)
  • A plummet with which the depth can be measured
  • Fishing box or seat to sit on and/or store material
  • Possibly a fishing rod rest

Plummet and Maggots

If the novice fisherman has already practiced a little and would like to switch to “predatory fishing” or “carp fishing” then it is recommended to find someone who is already used to this and to come along to learn.

Whitefish with the pole

As a beginner, it is best to start fishing with a pole. Simply put a stick with a line. So no spinning reel but just a harness that is attached to the line. That harness consists of a float, some leads, and a hook. Coarse fishing is ideal for this.

***

The choice of the rod depends a bit on the physique of the novice. You can use one of 3, 4, or 5 meters. Usually, you start with a telescopic rod of 4 meters. Then you also need a harness and you can even buy it ready-made. If you are more advanced you can make it yourself. For coarse fishing, look at the sizes used on the harness. The float can be between 0.5 and 1.5 g. and the hook size is between 14 and 18.

Harness

Harness

If you want to make your own harness it will take some practice, but you will soon master this. Not only the sizes of the float and hook are important, but also the thickness of the fishing line. In the fishing world, a line thickness of 0.14 mm is used for coarse fishing.

***

The fishermen say their usual term: I fish with 14 hundredths. A little lighter is even allowed (0.12 mm) because even with that you can already catch large fish. However, do not take your line too thick because a fish can see very well and if it notices the line, it will swim away.

***

Then you need a top rubber to attach the line to the rod. You put the line through that rubber and then you slide the rubber over the top of your rod so that it is properly secured. The top rubber itself must remain intact, so do not attach your line to it, otherwise, the rubber will wear through and you will lose your entire harness.

Top Rubber (Fishing)

Then unroll your spool of fishing line to a length of approximately 40 to 50 cm from the rod end. Then you cut the line and attach the float. Usually, the floats have an eye on the side and a silicone tube on the bottom. You can compare that tube a bit with the top rubber on the top of the rod, but much narrower.

***

You put your fishing line through the eye on the float and then you slide the tube at the bottom of the float off, you also put the fishing line through and then carefully slide the tube back onto the float at the bottom. Your float is now firmly attached to the line and you can still move it in height.

***

When fishing on still water, it is recommended to use a slim float because it disappears more easily underwater and the fish feels practically no resistance. On running water, on the other hand, it is better to use a float with a round body because it is more relaxed in the water.

***

Next step: attach a bottom line. That is a short line with a loop on one side and a hook on the other. Try to make the loop as small as possible. The bottom line is always thinner than the mainline and this to avoid losing your entire line if you are stuck somewhere. (catching on the bottom, water plants, rocks, tree,s or a very large fish).

***

Then the weakest point will always be broken first and that is of course the bottom line. So you still have your mainline and you just need to attach a new bottom line to continue fishing. If you are using a 0.14 mm mainline, it is best to take a bottom line of 0.10-0.12 mm.

***

Now you only need a few leads that you attach to the mainline. Certainly not on the bottom line because if you lose it, you have to re-confirm a lead. The weights serve to keep your float upright and also to ensure that the fish does not have to use force because then it is gone. Try to plumb the line so that a small piece of the floating antenna is still above the surface of the water. There are assortment boxes with leads of various weights. If you need several leads, make sure the largest one is at the top followed by the smaller one. This will prevent your harness from getting into a tangle.

Bottom Lines (Fishing)

Before you start fishing effectively, you must of course determine the depth. You do this with a plummet (see photo above). You place the plummet on the hook and carefully throw your hook (with plummet) where you are going to fish. This will pull the float underwater. Now you only have to search a few times by moving the float according to whether it has to be higher or lower. If you find that you can see the tip of your float just below the water surface then you are just right to start.

***

At the end of the fishing trip, you can wind up your harness on an empty fishing line holder.

Fishing Line Holders

And of course, you need bait to fish. Many a beginner starts with flaked bread, but it is better to use maggots. These will stay on the hook better and longer. The advantage of a maggot is that it keeps moving underwater, which is attractive for a hungry fish.

***

It may be difficult to hook a maggot if you have never done this before. Here I try to explain how best to do this. You will notice that the maggot has 2 black dots on the top and a small sheet on the side. Prick your hook through that sheet, then the maggot itself will remain intact and move well underwater.

***

And now the fishing can finally begin. You throw in your float where you plumbed and the float will stand up nicely. It is also recommended to throw additional bait on your fishing spot.

***

The additional groundbait is usually sold dry and in bags. Also, different types are specially intended for certain fish. The choice is abundant and the fisherman has to know a little about which fish species is most present at the place where he is going to fish.

***

Of course, you cannot throw in this food dry. So take a little water in a bucket and start by adding a little bit of groundbait. Start kneading it so that you get a solid substance that you can make balls. Your bait should certainly not be too weak because then it will not sink to the bottom and it will not have any effect. Don’t make too much bait at once: it’s a shame to throw it away. You can always add to it. Try to throw the baits as close to your float as possible.
