Maybe there’ll be a break in the heat next week (Sep 11, 2022)

In the first place, I’d like to greet my fellow fishers.
When we get to this time of year, one of the first things I talk about is how wonderful the weather has been and how things have begun to calm down.
***
But there was no way to avoid the sweltering heat from the previous week, regardless of where you were. So, if the temperature in the High Sierra reaches 90 degrees, it is time to give the fish a break. I can now estimate that the weather will start getting cooler by the middle of next week. Following, this makes it the perfect time to go autumn fishing.
***
Remember that outside of a registered campground, you cannot have campfires or charcoal barbecues anywhere. This applies to anyone who is planning on going on a few camping trips before the cold weather arrives.
***
Additionally, the peak of the big fire season occurs around this time of year. Also, we must pay close attention to where we are and what we’re doing because of the dry fuels. Furthermore, you should double or even triple-wrap your chains if you are pulling a boat or a camp trailer behind you.
***
Only if you smoke, the safest place to do this is in your vehicle or in a cleared and protected area. So let’s make an effort to provide a break for our brave firefighters this year. In addition, some changes will be made to your fish report as well.

Trying new, different things can yield great results (Sep 11, 2022)

I heard the strike before I actually saw it, but as soon as I did see it, I realized that it was no ordinary bass.
***
When I turned to face the commotion, I saw Ray Halter’s line cutting through the aquatic weeds as cleanly as a scythe. Also, the line was moving extremely quickly through the vegetation. When he turned the bass, it jumped in protest, exposing its distended stomach as well as the lure that was stuck inside its gaping mouth.
***
Ray and I fished in a weedy pond the week before to check whether the rain had cooled the water and increased the fish’s appetite. As a result, it turned out that they were lacking in food.
***
Ray’s lure was not what most fishermen would use to fish in shallow vegetation. He went with a crankbait with a square bill and cast it boldly into the grass that was growing in water that was between three and four feet deep.
Fish Tales From A Yukon National Park (Sep 11, 2022)

(source: nationalparkstraveler.org – by Jennifer Bain)
While trolling for lake trout on Mat’tana Man (Kathleen Lake) in September’s on-again, off-again drizzle, something amazing appears on the lake’s shore. The sun causes a little rainbow to form, which hangs so low over a mountain that it appears to be about to tumble into the Yukon.
***
This rainbow may be illuminating the route to one of Kluane’s most unusual animals. A Kokanee is a type of landlocked sockeye salmon that never leaves the fresh waters of the Kathleen Lake ecosystem in which they are born and spend their entire lives. Samay ghra is the name given to this species by the Southern Tutchone people, who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.
***
Kluane National Park is home to Canada’s northernmost free-living kokanee salmon population. Because kokanee is a protected species, we are not allowed to target them during today’s fishing excursion, and we will be fined if we do not promptly release any that we happen to catch by accident.
***
“We always make a joke that we’re going to catch a Kokanee at the lodge,” reveals the fishing guide at the Dalton Trail Lodge, Matt Corrente, making a reference to a popular beer brewed in the neighboring province of British Columbia, which is rich in salmon. “Kokanee” refers to a species of salmon that can be caught at the lodge.
Rough fish is too often overlooked as table fare (Fishing News 09-10-2022)

(source: tribtoday.com – by Jack Wollitz)
The species carp, gar, bowfin, and drum, along with a few others, are classified as rough fish. You shouldn’t think of these kinds of fish as “trash fish.”
***
As some people, unfortunately, assume. These fish are a lot of fun to reel in with a rod and reel, and they give bow fishermen a chance to stretch their strings throughout the entire year.
***
When properly prepared, rough fish can also make for excellent table fare, contrary to the widespread belief that this cannot be done.
***
There is a time and a place for rough fish. They clear the debris from the bottom.
***
Rough fish can, however, have a negative impact on sport fish populations when their numbers become excessive. Carp destroy nesting areas and will eat valuable eggs if given the chance.
***
An overpopulation of gars can be detrimental to the population of game fish. Concerning Asian carp, they are wholly unwelcome and must all be eradicated from the environment.
***
The use of a bow and arrow is a common technique for catching tough fish, particularly those that are difficult to land using a hook. A significant number of bow fishers do not eat the fish they shoot.
***
A few people use them to make fertilizer. You don’t hear about too many people taking them home and processing the fish for food like you would think they would.

Reel Hooker lands 473.1- pound prop watcher (Sep 10, 2022)
Sep 10, 2022
(source: lahainanews.com – by DONNELL TATE/Harbor Report)
LAHAINA — Nate Oeming of the Reel Hooker was able to reel in yet another impressive blue marlin, this one weighing in at 473.1 pounds. It was Captain Joel Cota and Deckman Sam Walker who were fishing with him.
***
When they had a prop watcher come up on the short-short position, Joel was fishing off the tip of the 100-fathom dogleg, which is just south of the LA marks off Olowalu. Joel commented that the bite he took was “pretty awesome.”
***
Because it lacked a bill, it was making a determined effort to swallow the lure, but it had a hard time keeping it in its mouth. All that could be seen of its face was its lower jaw. The lure was continually pulled out of its mouth, but it never managed to hook anything.
***
As the marlin attempted to consume the lure, it came completely out of the water in the short-short position with its mouth wide open. It did not catch the lure, but it circled back around to follow it. After that, it made another desperate charge in the direction of the lure. It only just managed to get a hold of the lure and pull a quit zip off the spool, but it was unable to keep hold of the lure.
***
Altogether, the marlin came to the lure 3 or 4 more times, and each time it was a frustrating encounter. During all of the commotion, it managed to lose the lure and ended up in the third wave back in the long corner position. The next time, it attacked with full force, its mouth gaping open, and swallowed the lure.
