During the second ban, the families of fishermen who lost their jobs at sea are given a one-time payment to make up for what they lost. But women who work in other jobs that are important to the supply chain, like selling goods at local markets, are left to take care of themselves.

The group has been making a difference for the past five years. Those who need it most have been able to heal through time on the water. Eric Guse likes to be by the water because it makes him feel calm.

Luis Planas, who is the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, has asked the European Commission (EC) to stop putting the implementing regulation on marine protected areas into effect.
This regulation makes it illegal to fish in 87 deep-water areas on the continental shelf. According to the Spanish government, Luis has asked the EC to change it right away based on new scientific data that is already available.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan sent her formal response to Defra’s consultation on creating a Highly Protected Marine Area (HPMA) off Lindisfarne before the September 28 deadline.
Islanders have a lot of problems with the plan. They are worried that removing the fishing community from the island would be terrible.
Ms. Trevelyan said, “We all want to see fishing that is sustainable and healthy marine life. No one wants this more than the fishermen of Holy Island, who are already very aware of marine life and subject to a lot of rules.”

Brian Laube doesn’t like winter, but ice fishing is his thing. The director of community services for the City of Newton knew that ice fishing is a popular hobby in cold places, so on September 21, he asked the park board for their support in letting people fish through the ice on the only fishable pond in the city’s park system.
Right now, you can fish in Cardinal Pond, but only the most dedicated fishermen can get to its waters. The three-acre pond is in the Arbor Estates neighborhood. There is no maintained access point or parking lot for visitors. Also, you can’t park on North 11th Avenue East, which is close by.
EU fight on illegal fishing must move from paper to online

Auditors said in a report released Monday that Europe should create an EU-wide electronic database of catch certificates to better track illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing from third countries (26 September).
Eva Lindstrom, who is in charge of the audit, said that the current paper-based system is a problem because “the lack of digitalization makes it not only inefficient but also makes it more likely that fraud will happen.”
In 2019, the European Commission proposed a common IT system called “CATCH” to automate controls and cross-check in real-time. This was in response to requests from some member states, industry groups, and civil society.
But none of the member states are using it.

In a Cornish harbor, a sculpture of a man and a seagull looking out to sea has been put up.
The Waiting for Fish bronze sculpture in Porthleven is meant to show how important it is to fish in small, sustainable ways.
Holly Bendall, the artist who made it, said it makes people think about where the fish we eat come from.
As part of the 2022 Porthleven Arts Festival, the sculpture was shown for the first time.
It was based on a sketch that Ms. Bendall did of a man and a seagull sitting on a bench in Cadgwith and looking out to sea.

You may have heard that Keith Poche won the Bassmaster Central Open on a tough Red River. But many people haven’t seen his Instagram posts about what he had to deal with on the last day.
Here are two videos he posted about what happened to him. Basically, another unhappy fisherman didn’t like that he had to use a small ditch to get to a backwater area where he was fishing. Someone tried to stop Poche from getting to the hole that would win him the tournament by putting rocks in the opening of the ditch between the second and last days.

Off the coast of Kochi on September 22, the ship hit the back of a fishing boat.
The Kerala Fishing Boat Owners Association asked for money to fix a fishing boat that was damaged when a Malaysian tankship hit it on September 22 off the coast of Kochi. The ship operators have agreed to pay the money.
After talks and a final agreement, the leaders of the association said that the boat’s owner, who was from Beypore, was given 10 lakh as compensation to cover the cost of fixing the boat and paying for the fishermen’s medical care.

A bill in the U.S. Senate that has support from both parties would make it illegal for ships caught illegally catching seafood to come to U.S. ports. It would also give the Coast Guard more money to enforce the law.
When Democrats and Republicans work together for the good of fish and fishermen, it’s a time to celebrate. And it happened when Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, and Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, brought the FISH Act to the U.S. Senate at the end of August.
A Senate report says that if the bill becomes law, ships caught in the illegal fishing trade would be put on a black list, banned from U.S. ports and waters, and the Coast Guard would get more money to fight the trade.
“This is a bill that everyone can agree on and that we really need,” says Sullivan.

Hessenauer remembers going to his uncle’s house near Kalamazoo, Michigan, which was on a lake. “When I was a kid, fishing and just being on the water were two of my favorite things to do. He said, “I wanted to do that for a living.”
Utrup also learned to fish on Lake Erie with his grandfather, who ran a charter boat. “When I was young, I got to spend a lot of time on the Great Lakes. I’ve always been a little bit taken with lakes. “I knew this was where I wanted to end up, so I knew I had to get here,” he said.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Lander Region has named the Hopkins Hamilton Ranch the Landowner of the Year for 2022. In 1962, Bill and Duveene Hamilton bought their first ranch in Lyons Valley, which is east of Lander. Soon after that, they bought the nearby Hopkins Ranch, and, in 1964, they made the Hopkins Hamilton Ranch Company.
Even though the Hopkins family hasn’t been involved in the business for more than 50 years, Bill kept the name out of respect for the family who gave him a chance to follow his dream. About 5,000 deeded acres are now part of the Hopkins Hamilton Ranch. They take care of cattle on BLM, state, and private land in the Government Draw and East Beaver common allotments.
