Do you know what is the best bait to use when fishing for crappie on Lake Lanier on a weekday morning? Where to go? It’s something best learned on a screened porch with Woodie Malone while eating fried chicken, collards, and cornbread.

Malone is vice president of North Georgia Crappie Anglers, Inc. He was born in Atlanta and worked as a banker and real estate investor before retiring. He is a big fan of fishing and loves to talk to other people about it.

Even if you don’t like fishing, it’s hard not to be drawn in by the way his eyes light up when he talks about an upcoming trip to Apalachicola, where he goes every two weeks to fish for triple tail in the ocean. But when he talks about the good things this fishing club does for his community right here in Cumming, they shine even brighter.

Fishing guides excited for influx of international clients

(source: nzherald.co.nz By Sally Murphy of RNZ)

After two years of the border being closed, fishing guides are thrilled to welcome back international anglers this season.

The freshwater fishing season began on Saturday and was expected to be crowded because opening day rarely falls on a Saturday.

Fish and Game anticipates selling 100,000 fishing licenses this year, with roughly 10% going to international tourists.

That’s wonderful news for fishing guides, who lost their entire business overnight when the borders closed due to Covid.

Martin Langlands of Troutlands Guiding Service in Canterbury stated that while the last several years had been difficult, bookings for this season were already looking promising.

“The season is looking great, especially from a guiding standpoint.” I’m just pleased that the borders are open since I’ve had a lot of international bookings come in, as have most guides across the country.

PHOTOS: TENNESSEE MAN BREAKS RECORD WITH ENORMOUS BLUE CATFISH (Fishing News 10-03-2022)

(source: themeateater.com by Aidan Morton)

Last month, a Tennessee man stunned state wildlife officials by landing a massive blue catfish weighing well over 100 pounds. Last month, angler Micka Burkhart snagged the 118.7-pound blue on the Cumberland River.

While an official confirmation is awaited, Burkhart’s catch from September 24 will most certainly become the new Tennessee state record, breaking the previous mark that had stood for nearly 24 years.

Burkhart was fishing with his wife on a section of the Cumberland River in northern Tennessee when he hooked a “good” fish, according to News Channel 9.

He was using a three-inch skipjack chunk hooked on an 8/0 Gamakatsu hook and trolled at 40 to 50 feet on or just above the bottom. The catfish swam towards Burkhart’s boat and then took off on an aggressive initial run, demonstrating that Burkhart was dealing with more than just a regular fish.

The technique of casting a variety of devices into bodies of water in an attempt to lure creatures lurking in the deep to the shore where the “catch” could be converted into a satisfying meal was one of mankind’s first interests.

For untold numbers of people throughout millennia, fishing has been both a pleasurable pastime for many and a full-time career for others. The sport continues to draw legions of anglers who regard “going fishing” as one of life’s most pleasurable activities.

However, there are many others who would like to go fishing but do not have the necessary knowledge. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has created a program to educate people on how to fish.

WATCH: Lakeside fishing team casts on the national stage

While football, basketball, and baseball are the most popular high school sports, Lakeside also has a strong tradition in volleyball, golf, tennis, and, for the last five years, bass fishing.

Some Lakeside anglers have been with the squad since they were in fifth grade. Fishing teams from high schools compete in two-man teams.

Lakeside fishing team head coach Christy Culbreath led her teams to five first-place finishes in the 2021-2022 season.

“We began five years ago,” Culbreath explained. “These kids have come a long way in five years, watching them take their big ole bags of fish up to the weigh-in scale, but that was the love of a couple of youngsters who heard about the fishing team starting and had the idea, and they knew I loved to fish, so they approached me and said let’s do it.”
