UK fisheries were one of the most contentious issues during the Brexit negotiations, but now that a deal has been reached between Britain and the EU, British fishermen can finally rejoice. Environment minister Mark Spencer told the Commons on Tuesday that leaving the EU has given the UK an extra 30,000 tonnes of fishing quota.
***
He stated: “The fishing opportunities in the United Kingdom are negotiated in three major forums. First, there is the bilateral UK-EU relationship. The UK and the EU reached an agreement today on total allowable catches for 69 stocks in 2023, as well as arrangements for non-quota stocks.
***
“Based on historic landing prices, this agreement provides fishing opportunities for more than 140,000 tonnes for the UK fleet and is worth approximately £282 million. As part of this agreement, we have agreed with access arrangements for albacore tuna and spurdog in the North Sea for the first time in the written record between the UK and the EU.
New Recreational Groundfish Fishing Regulations Coming In The New Year (Fishing News 20221219-20221225)
Dec 20, 2022
(source: wildlife.ca.gov by ???)
In the year 2023, there will be modifications made to the recreational fishing seasons, depth limits, and bag limits for a wide variety of groundfish species.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council approved the new regulations in June 2022, and the California Fish and Game Commission approved them in November 2022.
It is anticipated that the new regulations will go into effect on or around January 1, 2023. Beginning on January 1, the boat-based fishery for the majority of groundfish species across the state will be closed, but spear divers and shore-based anglers will continue to have opportunities to fish for groundfish throughout the entire year. This is similar to what has happened in previous years.
***
The boat-based seasons for groundfish such as rockfish, cabezon, and greenling (RCG) as well as lingcod will bring a combination of expanded and reduced fishing chances depending on the species of groundfish. In contrast to previous years, all Groundfish Management Areas will have a portion of the fishing season during which “any-depth” fishing will be permitted.
During this time, fishermen will not be subject to the depth limits that are imposed by the Rockfish Conservation Area (RCA). This opens up new fishing chances for deeper-water shelf and slope rockfish, which are most plentiful in regions that were before off-limits to recreational groundfish fishing. These rockfish prefer slope and shelf habitats with steeper slopes.

A teenage boy from Queensland claims that he was “startled” when he was challenged by a “rude” woman on a beach on the Sunshine Coast, who allegedly bit off part of his fishing line.
On December 14, Ocean Barker, who was 13 years old at the time, was at his usual place on Yaroomba beach close to Point Arkwright when the woman approached him.
***
Ocean remarked, “She simply walked up to my line and just put her teeth in it… then bit it off.”
“She was probably around a meter and a half away from me… smiling and laughing in my face,” the witness recalled.
He reported that the woman went away after that without uttering a single word.
“I was taken aback; there were two other gals down here, and they were like, “What the hell is going on? Are you OK?’, “he said.
Ocean stated that the occurrence led to the loss of a little bait fish as well as his hook, line, and sinker.
He insisted that he was not blocking the path of the woman in any way and that there was sufficient space on the beach to get around him.

The young man made an urgent phone call to his parent and informed them of what had occurred.
After some time had passed, when his mother Vanessa Buitenhuis became aware of what had occurred, she searched for the woman on social media in the expectation that she would express regret for what she had done.
Public Advisory: Salmon Poaching Investigation Results in Convictions, Fines, and Prohibitions (Fishing News 20221219-20221225)

Two people have been found guilty, fined, and banned from fishing in inland waters as a result of an investigation that was conducted by officers from the Resource Enforcement Division of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture. The investigation focused on the illegal taking of salmon.
***
Jordan Hodder and Brady Hill, both of Stoneville, were found guilty and fined on December 13, 2022, by the Provincial Court in Gander for illegally netting fish in inland waters in violation of Section 10 (2) of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery Regulations. The offense occurred in violation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery Regulations.
***
Both were given a fine of $2,500, a prohibition against participating in recreational fisheries for a period of three years, and a prohibition against being on or within 20 meters of inland waters for a period of three years. In addition, the prohibitions against participating in recreational fisheries and being on or within 20 meters of inland waters were concurrent.
***
On August 5, 2022, Resource Enforcement Officers acting on information obtained from surveillance activities and information gathered from Fisheries and Oceans Canada River Guardians were able to apprehend the individuals in Stoneville. The individuals were apprehended as a result of these activities.
One canoe, two-gill nets, one Atlantic salmon, one fish tray, and a face mask that was used during the commission of the offense were among the items that were taken into custody during the course of the investigation and subsequently forfeited to the Crown.

The general public is encouraged to report suspected illegal fishing and hunting activity because the information provided by the general public plays a significant role in assisting investigations that are being conducted by Resource Enforcement Officers.
Vietnam strictly punishes illegal fishing activities: Deputy Minister
Dec 22, 2022

After receiving a “yellow card” warning from the European Commission (EC) five years ago, Vietnam has made significant strides in the improvement of the fishing industry in order to meet the requirements of the EC’s illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention program.
***
The European Commission plans to send a delegation to Vietnam the following year in order to evaluate the anti-IUU fishing measures that have been implemented there.
Vietnam News Agency was given an interview with Phung Duc Tien, who is the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in Vietnam.
Where do the challenges lie in the process of putting anti-IUU fishing measures into effect?
In point of fact, there are still a few fishing boats flying the flag of Vietnam that operate illegally in international waters. The European Commission has stated that it will not lift the “yellow card” warning if Vietnam does not put an end to this practice.
***
In addition to that, the processes of registration, the distribution of fishing licenses, and the installation of cruise monitoring equipment (VMS) are not yet finished. The National Fisheries Database does not yet contain all of the most recent information regarding fishing vessels (VNFishbase).
***
Law enforcement and administrative punishments are still ineffective, and they do not work in sync with one another. There are some communities that do not put measures in place to combat IUU fishing.
***
Not only is the awareness of fishermen contributing to the gradual removal of the aforementioned limitations but also the irresponsibility of some organizations and individuals in carrying out their duties in the inspection and monitoring of anti-IUU fishing measures. This lack of responsibility is a contributing factor.
Lobster fishing: Seychelles’ season to open only for 2 months in 2023 (Fishing News 20221219-20221225)

(source: seychellesnewsagency.com.vn by Salifa Karapetyan Edited by: Betymie Bonnelame )
A recent survey reveals that there has been a decrease in the catch rate, the amount that has been caught, and the number of juveniles, which will result in Seychelles’ lobster fishing season opening for only two months in 2023.
It was recently announced at a press conference held by the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) that the lobster season will begin on January 15 and end on March 14 of the following year. This will keep the season at a length of two months for the next two years in a row.
***
The Seychelles, which are a group of 115 islands located in the western Indian Ocean, traditionally have a harvesting season for lobster that lasts for three months once every two years.
Rodney Govinden, who heads up the fisheries research department at SFA, explained that the authority is taking a precautionary approach to maintaining a season that opens for two months in order to keep the stock at a level that is manageable.
***
According to him, the SFA discovered that there are issues with the number of juvenile lobsters that were caught after conducting a survey in the month of October at 20 different locations in the western region of Mahe.
***
“In a previous survey, there was a balance where 50 percent were juvenile lobsters and 50 percent were adult-sized. This was the case because there were an equal number of juveniles and adults.
During the course of this survey, we were able to observe that there had been a reduction in the number of juveniles from fifty percent to forty percent. We have noticed that there is a reduction in the number of lobsters being caught as well as the catch rate when the season is opened consecutively, which has been the case for the past three years. This occurs when the season has been opened consecutively “said Govinden.
***
In spite of this observation, the SFA, in conjunction with the Ministry of Fisheries, has decided to start the 2023 season. The same survey revealed that there has been a slight increase in the size of the lobsters that have been caught, so this justifies opening the season. In comparison to the prior survey, this one revealed a 25 percent rise in the overall abundance of lobsters of size at which they could be fished.
