Largemouth Bass

In the winter, two anglers from Kentucky visited a famous lake in Texas, where they reeled in three basses weighing more than 11 pounds.

Located in central Texas, east of San Angelo, O.H. Ivie Lake is one of the best places in the United States to catch a monster largemouth bass. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, two bass fishermen from Kentucky road-tripped to the 19,000-acre reservoir in search of the lake’s fabled largemouths.

Cole Logsdon and Dalton Smith, both from Kentucky, went 15 hours to Texas in search of the fabled double-digit bass in the state’s copious waterways. In 1990, after rerouting and damming sections of the Colorado and Concho Rivers, a reservoir was created. More than a hundred feet of depth may be found in the lake.

In a Facebook video broadcast made from the lake, Smith stated, “We worked the lake for a little over two days.” On the first day, we simply rode about to take in the lake’s surroundings. On day two, though, Cole reeled in a bass that weighed 11.11 pounds.

The heroes go on an unforgettable ice-fishing expedition to Lake Cascade.

CASCADE, Idaho — It takes a serious hobbyist to fly hundreds of miles to go ice fishing, and when you add a group of heroes to the mix, you have the makings of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

A Wisconsin guy founded the nonprofit Hero Fishing, whose goal is to pay for the transportation costs incurred by modern-day heroes on their way to and from Idaho in order to spend three days fishing. The organization takes nominations for any hero and selects the top six or seven.

According to Hero Fishing President Kent Perleberg, “Heroes on Ice” is a nationwide group that brings veterans, first responders, physicians, nurses, and children ice fishing on Lake Cascade. This way, they can improve their mental health and catch Golden Perch.

Lake Cascade in Idaho is well recognized as one of the greatest spots in the United States to reel in a Jumbo Perch.

A 63-year-old man from Captain Cook went missing off the coast of Honaunau while fishing on Sunday morning, prompting a search by the Hawaii Fire Department and the Coast Guard.

Mark Knittle, who is 5’10” tall, 185 pounds, and has brown hair with a white mustache and beard, is the subject of a missing person investigation by the Hawaii Island Police Department.

After hooking ahi about 5 a.m. Sunday, Knittle and a companion told police they were fishing around the “C” buoy, four miles from the Honaunau Boat Ramp. Knittle said, “the fish is tremendous,” and then the companion saw him jump ship.

According to the authorities, the man’s buddy tried and failed to grasp the line before he vanished into the ocean.

Officials have said that there will be a 72-hour search conducted by the fire department and the coast guard.

Officer Melani Cline can be reached at melani.cline@hawaiicounty.gov or by calling the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.

The fire on the ‘Jay Bhole’ was reported to the ICG’s Maritime Rescue sub-center (MRSC) in Porbandar at 9:45 a.m., the ICG stated in a press statement. The vessel was located 50 kilometers from the shore.

On Monday, the ICG rescued seven people from a burning fishing boat in the Arabian Sea near Gujarat. The incident occurred near the city of Ahmedabad.

According to a press statement from the force, the Interceptor Class Ships C-161 and C-156 were promptly redirected, and an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) was deployed from the ICG Air Station at Porbandar to begin a rescue mission.

“When ICG personnel arrived at the scene at 10:20 a.m., they discovered the crew had abandoned the boat rather than try to put out the fire. Two of the seven crew members were rescued by a neighboring dinghy, while the remaining five are presumed dead. After that, the ICG helicopter searched for two hours before rescuing the five missing crew members.

Concentrations of “forever chemicals” in freshwater fish have been shown to be rather high.

There are significant concentrations of dangerous “forever chemicals” in freshwater fish across the country, according to new research. The fish in the research averaged roughly 280 times higher in these dangerous compounds called PFAS than fish sold in stores. Fish collected in urban areas had especially high concentrations.

This Environmental Research research is disturbing for the recreational fishermen who wish to consume what they catch. A prior FDA research reported minimal PFAS levels in commercially available fish, perhaps because offshore fisheries are less contaminated.

Recreational fishermen in Maine are opposed to a new rule they claim would hurt their industry. (Fishing News 20230116-20230122)

In the coastal waters and a few of the main tidal rivers of Maine, striped bass is a valuable natural resource.

Recreational fishermen and marine guides benefit from the fish, which may yield large and many fish.

Thus, many Maine and New Hampshire striper fishermen fear an Atlantic States Marine Fishing Commission proposal may affect their fishery.

The ocean economy would benefit greatly from allowing the 15 states that employ ASMFC standards to sell commercial striped bass licenses.

The debate is whether allowing states that catch the maximum amount of striped bass to be sold to use unfilled quotas from other states will boost the East Coast harvest and reduce the number of fish reaching Maine.

The Supreme Court is deferring a decision on an interim appeal over purse seine fishing until further notice.

The Supreme Court postponed its verdict on purse seine fishermen’s temporary appeal to operate beyond Tamil Nadu’s 12-nautical-mile restriction.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Tamil Nadu, contended before Justices A.S. Bopanna and Sudhanshu Dhulia that the federal government’s view, based on an expert committee’s conclusion that controlled purse seine fishing beyond Tamil Nadu’s territorial seas produces no harm, is erroneous.

Anything at the depths of the sea might be dragged up and caught in a purse seine net whose mouth is one hectare in size. The Center’s proposal to regulate, control, and oversee purse seine fishing is not something I can support. He stated that small fishermen working within territorial seas would lose their livelihood if this proposal was approved.

Ice fishing is also a bit crazy (Fishing News 20230116-20230122)

I had already asked Terri, an adventurous family friend, whether she was interested in going ice fishing with us.

I prefer fishing,” she hedged, but I can’t stand the ice.”

Definitely, I agree with Terri that the rise of the “hard-water” fishing season during COVID-19 shows a little insanity. Even though I’m not good in the cold anymore, I ice fish 12 times a winter with lots of gear. It defies logic on every level.

Most hunters and anglers are upbeat people, but ice fishing may truly put us to the test. I fish through an eight-inch hole on Lake Winnipeg, the ninth-largest lake. When fishing in open water, you may be trolling or throwing your line to cover the water. In the winter, you can’t really go from one little location to another unless you spend all day boring holes in the ice. When framed in this way, the prospect of frying up some fish doesn’t sound all that enticing.

Not to be too serious, but I want people to know that ice fishing is dangerous before I offer it to them. There is a wider variety of potential hazards than in any of my other outdoor pursuits. Unfortunately, ice and cold weather are not always simple to interpret, and if you do, the consequences can be disastrous.

I’ll be more concerned about avoiding harm than with perfecting my fishing techniques.
