For the third time in a little over a month, an Indiana angler has broken the state record for catching burbot.
According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, on Tuesday, January 10, Phillip Duracz of Chesterton, a city in Porter County, caught burbot weighing 11.40 pounds from Lake Michigan.
Scott Skafar of Valparaiso, Indiana, reeled in two burbots on December 30, 2022, weighing 10.2 and nearly 9.7 pounds, respectively, breaking the state record that had stood for 32 years.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reports that in 1990 a burbot caught in the state set a new record weight of 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
Ben Dickinson, a fisheries research biologist at Lake Michigan, said in a statement that the recent warm weather combined with light winds has provided excellent opportunities for anglers to fish Lake Michigan at a time they are typically unable to safely access the lake.

The Swedish prime minister is embroiled in a political scandal after it was revealed that he had employed a top adviser who had engaged in illegal eel fishing and then lied to the authorities about it.
In October of last year, Ulf Kristersson appointed Peter Magnus Nilsson, despite knowing that Nilsson had committed illegal acts.
The PM said that while the aide’s actions were “stupid,” they in no way reflected Mr. Nilsson’s suitability for the position.
The Social Democrats, an opposition party, have demanded Nilsson’s resignation.
Given “the troubles we have with a serious felony in Sweden,” the prime minister’s top aide lying to the police is unacceptable, according to Ardalan Shekarabi, the justice spokesperson for the center-left party, in an interview with public broadcaster SVT.
Sweden’s new center-right coalition government, supported by a far-right party, took office in October 2022, and one of its first appointments was a finance journalist who managed to turn prime ministerial aide Peter Magnus Nilsson.
The incident of illegal eel fishing occurred in the fall of 2021, off the southern coast of Sweden.

Imagine the possibilities… The newest upcoming annual event in Prince George’s has gotten off to a roaring start.
On Sunday, January 29, the Ness Lake Recreation Commission (NLRC) will host an ice fishing derby with a $20 entry fee for each fisherman.
Mark Stofer, a director at the NLRC, said to My PG Now, “Currently we are sitting at 120 [fishers].”
It could be much more than that as we move closer to the date if you know Prince George; currently, we are estimating 150 guests, but that number could change.
More than $7,000 has been pledged by sponsors toward the event’s prizes.
If you come, there’s a good chance you’ll win one of the 66 prizes we’re giving away, which range in value from $600 to $5, as Stofer put it.
Smokers, fish finders, underwater cams, and coolers are just a few of the high-end items up for grabs, with more basic prizes including rods and tackleboxes.
Since the sponsors are footing the bill for all the prizes, Stofer says they have more leeway to donate the money to charity.

Anglers from all over the world will descend upon the beautiful East Riding of Yorkshire coast on March 3rd–5th for the Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championship (EOBC).
A three-day seaside fishing competition is held between the northern end of North Marine Promenade in Bridlington and the southern end of Pilot Jetty in Spurn Point.
For the 29th year in a row, there will be an amazing prize pool full of cool gadgets and expensive fishing gear. All while having a great time and making some new friends, competitors will gain invaluable experience, strategies, skills, and techniques. You’ll be able to learn about any and every facet of sea angling from some of the best companies in the business, who will be exhibiting their wares at the event.

Infractions committed while sports fishing in the Mackenzie hydro canals have been uncovered thanks to a joint Fish and Game operation.
Hamish Stevens, the compliance coordinator for Central South Island Fish and Game, said that on Saturday and Sunday, 12 rangers from Central South Island and North Canterbury Fish and Game focused on night ranging in the Mackenzie Basin hydro canal fishery.
“He said that the canal fishery is among the best in New Zealand for catching trout and salmon.
Licenses and rules are in place to ensure healthy fish populations.”
Veterans Park Lake to Host Trout Fishing Program

One can participate in a trout fishing program hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation in Fulton.
According to a press release from the MDC, the program will be at Veterans Park Lake on February 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. Participation in the event is entirely gratis. Those over the age of six are welcome to attend.
Participants between the ages of 16 and 64, as stated in the release, are required to have a valid Missouri fishing license. A trout permit is also required for everyone taking part.
The MDC staff will instruct the participants on how to cast for trout and how to clean their catch.
The event has a registration requirement that can be met through MDC’s online portal.

The weather in South Florida right now is great. The mornings are cool, and the afternoons are nice. Some fish seem to like the mild weather, but others don’t seem to like it as much.
There are a few things that have made it hard to fish in our area. Offshore, the water is very clear and there is no current. Most fishing guidelines and captains look for just a current that goes with the wind. This lets the baits move naturally and moves the chum and smell in a straight line away from the boat. The best current is one coming from the north.
We have had a negligible current or a south current in the last few weeks. Many fish are on high alert in clear water as they can see a massive leader, a big hook, and the end of the line, so they avoid your bait. So, what can you do to change these things? Nothing. But you can use the fish you can catch when the water is clear and there are few or no currents.
