The Environment Agency caught a Northumberland man fishing illegally on a beach and sentenced him.
The Environment Agency was able to successfully prosecute Paul Common, 37, of East Lea, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, for illegally fishing with a gill net. On Friday, January 27, Paul Common appeared in Newcastle Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge. He is from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
It was decided that he would have to pay a total fine of £421.
In addition to the used gill net, any other evidence was discarded.

On a Saturday afternoon, hundreds of ice fishermen descended on Silver Lake’s slushy, frozen surface, surprising the northern pike, pumpkinseed, and large- and small-mouth bass underneath.
On Saturday, Vermont Fish & Wildlife welcomed locals and visitors alike to Silver Lake State Park for a free day of ice fishing. The event drew in excess of 350 people. Fish & Wildlife staff at six tutorial kiosks on the frozen lake taught participants how to ice fish.
Each training segment was marked by a tall, colored flag that wavered wildly in the brisk wind. Participants had to complete at least three training segments before they could check out ice fishing gear. Knots, lures, ice hardness testing with a spud bar, augering, and ice fishing were addressed.
The waters around Jersey are undergoing a period of change as new fishing laws for EU vessels are implemented.

Ministers expect new EU fishing arrangements in Jersey waters to improve relations with France.
On February 1st, permits governing the “extent and nature” of EU fishing vessels’ operations in Jersey seas will go into force.
All 136 permanent licenses issued by the Government of Jersey to vessels registered in the European Union will be updated to include the permits.
After a period of heightened tensions over the issue, including when French trawlers blocked St. Helier harbor in May 2021 and two Royal Navy cruisers were brought in by the UK, ministers believe the new arrangements will signal a return to calmer waters.

David Parry, master of Le Men DU (FY408), was fined £7,841 by Barnstaple Magistrates Court on December 19, 2022. (MMO).
Fine of £2,225 plus a victim surcharge of £225 plus costs of £5,365 totaling £7,490.
Mr. Parry failed to report five fishing trips to the MMO between 5 July 2019 and 25 September 2019. Mr. Parry, in his capacity as master of the vessel during these fishing expeditions, was responsible for submitting the required landing declarations to the MMO.
While electronic logs detailing each trip’s departure time, fishing activity, estimated catch, species caught, location, and return time were entered on each trip, the landing declaration verifying the catch weight was never provided.
This data is needed for fish population control and UK fisheries sustainability, which benefits the fishing industry and the public.

Due to unsafe ice conditions, the annual Cobden Civitan Fishing Derby has been postponed from February 4 to February 18.
To ensure everyone’s safety, we had to postpone the event. The decision was made on January 24 during a meeting of the Cobden Civitan Club’s Fishing Derby Committee. At the time of the announcement, the average ice depth was 6–10 inches, while 18 inches is necessary.
Since 2010, the event has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Hospice Renfrew, Robbie Dean Centre, and others.

On February 1, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries inspectors cited two individuals for fishing violations in Grand Bayou, Plaquemines Parish.
Jeremiah Phillips, 42, and Donnie Tayman, 69, of Port Sulphur were cited for illegally retaining commercial fish without permits, equipment, or vessels.
Phillips was also cited for his second offense of culling oysters in a closed location, the third offense of fishing while under revocation, and the fourth offense of recreational fishing without a basic and saltwater fishing license. On January 13th, agents caught Phillips and issued him citations for identical infractions.
Tayman also violated a no-wake zone, harvested oysters illegally, and fished without a license.
Agents in Grand Bayou saw a boat violating a no-wake zone. When agents boarded the boat to check for safety regulations, they discovered the suspects were eating crabs and oysters.
