According to a report by the Royal United Services Institute and The Pew Charitable Trust, illegal fishing, worth up to $36.4 billion annually and closely linked to organized crime, is set to pose a greater threat to global security as climate change warms the world’s oceans.
As fish stocks move to cooler, deeper waters due to warming oceans, criminal operations are expected to follow, crossing existing maritime boundaries. The report also notes that global consumption of seafood has risen at more than twice the rate of population growth since the 1960s, with an increasing proportion of global fish stocks being fished beyond biologically sustainable limits.
Additionally, fish play a crucial role in capturing carbon through feeding, so a decline in fish stocks could exacerbate warming temperatures.

That sounds like a great event for young anglers and their families! The free youth freshwater fishing derby will take place at the Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Lakeland on April 1, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event will be held at Derby Lake Recreational Facility, which is a 16-acre former phosphate mine that is stocked with a variety of freshwater sport fish and catfish.
The lake has seven fishing piers and a 200-foot boardwalk for fishing that is accessible to anglers with disabilities. In addition to fishing, there will be a casting contest, exhibitors, and other outdoor activities for the whole family. Publix Supermarkets will provide a free lunch.
Bait and a limited number of loaner rods and reels will be provided at no charge for those younger than age 15. However, all youths must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It’s worth noting that a fishing license is not required on this particular weekend because it falls during a license-free freshwater fishing weekend.
Registration is required, and it began on March 1 and ends at 5 p.m. on March 31. To pre-register, interested participants can call the FWC Southwest Regional Office at 863-648-3200, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

It’s great to hear that Israel Sapp was able to find some peace and enjoyment in nature by going fishing on the Altamaha River near Jesup. Even more exciting is that he was able to catch two fish that have now been established as benchmark records by Georgia Lake & River Records.
Israel caught a crappie weighing 1 lb., 9.76-ozs., just above the benchmark weight of 1 lb., 8 ozs., and a yellow perch weighing 9.92-ozs., above the benchmark weight of 8 ozs. It’s interesting to note that both of these fish were not previously listed as records for the Altamaha River, creating an opportunity for anglers to establish benchmark records.
The establishment of these benchmark records is an ongoing effort by GON to encourage and recognize exceptional fish caught by anglers. Once established, these records can be quickly overtaken by even bigger fish, making the records more credible over time. It’s great to see anglers like Israel taking the time to have their catches weighed and certified on scales to establish these records.
Overall, it’s a reminder to us all to take the time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and appreciate the unique and diverse wildlife that surrounds us.
