The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) carries out an annual fish stocking program at Fort McCoy. The program involves releasing approximately 15,000 rainbow trout into seven major waterways on the installation. The fish stocking usually takes place in April, in time for the start of the annual fishing season opener in Wisconsin and on post.
According to John Noble, a Fisheries Biologist with the Fort McCoy Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division Natural Resources Branch, rainbow trout are a popular fish species among anglers at Fort McCoy. This explains why they are stocked in such large numbers on a post.
The fish stocking effort is carried out by the staff from the USFWS Genoa National Fish Hatchery located in Genoa, Wisconsin. The goal of the program is to provide anglers with ample fishing opportunities on the installation’s waterways.

A recent clash between rival groups in the Alingani community of Lafia East Development Area in Nasarawa State, Nigeria has resulted in the death of at least three people and left over ten others injured. According to reports, the disagreement started between two rival groups that were loyal to different ward heads appointed for Alingani. One group was appointed by the overseer of the development area, Barr Mohammed Haruna, while the other was appointed by the ward head of the area, the Oron Akye, Alhaji Abdullahi Ugah.

The cause of the dispute is believed to be related to a fishing pond in the area. A source close to the community, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the appointed ward head by the government, Dalhatu Mohammed Omiya, officially wrote to the overseer about the impending crisis emanating from the pond. The letter was reportedly an intimidation tactic to pressure the overseer to take action, but it apparently led to a clash between the two rival groups.

The violence that broke out resulted in three people losing their lives and over ten others being injured. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. As a result of the conflict, the Alingani community has been thrown into chaos, with residents living in fear of further violence.

The clash has prompted calls for the authorities to intervene and bring an end to the violence. Local community leaders are also calling on the government to find a lasting solution to the dispute to prevent further loss of lives and property. There have been previous clashes between rival groups in the area, and it is feared that if the situation is not handled properly, it could escalate into a more significant conflict.

The government has yet to release a statement regarding the incident, and the security situation in the area remains tense. It is hoped that the authorities will take swift action to address the root cause of the conflict and prevent future violence.

White bass are started to run in one part of Michigan, according to fishing reports. (Fishing News 20230424-20230430)

According to the weekly fishing report from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, white bass are starting to run in one area of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Anglers on the Saginaw River have reported seeing white bass running the tributaries. The DNR said that the white bass have shown up recently, and while it seems early for them to be running the tributaries to spawn, they are starting. This means that it is a good time for anglers to take advantage of this opportunity to catch white bass.
Apart from white bass, the report also indicated that walleye, steelhead, and perch have been popular catches in other parts of the state in the past week. This suggests that Michigan is currently a great location for fishing enthusiasts, with a variety of fish species available for catching. As always, it is important for anglers to follow the rules and regulations set by the state and local authorities, including obtaining the appropriate fishing license and observing catch limits.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Inland Fisheries Division and Major League Fishing (MLF) teamed up for a project to improve fishing in Lake Claiborne. On April 25, 2023, 32 fish-attracting structures, also known as reefs, were added to the lake with a value of $25,000, donated by MLF. This project was conducted simultaneously with the Bass Pro Tour Heavy Hitters tournament, which was happening in north Louisiana.
LDWF fisheries biologists, members of the Lake Claiborne Watershed District Commission, MLF Fisheries Management Division staff, Duck Dynasty celebrity and crappie angler John Godwin, along with MLF anglers Kevin VanDam, Gary Klein, and Dakota Ebare, assembled and deployed the fish attractors. They placed them in various depths and locations throughout the lake, including near the Lake Claiborne State Park fishing piers and along the shoreline near the camping area to help bank fishing anglers. The aim was to target multiple species of fish.
The addition of these fish attractors to Lake Claiborne is expected to improve the fishing experience for anglers. The attractors will create new habitats for fish, making it easier for anglers to catch them. Additionally, the placement of the attractors in specific areas of the lake will allow anglers to target specific species. This project is part of LDWF’s ongoing efforts to enhance and preserve Louisiana’s natural resources. The collaboration with MLF demonstrates the importance of partnerships between government agencies and private organizations in achieving common goals.
