For several years, salmon prices continued to increase steadily. Then, a drastic decline occurred in the market. This shift directly coincided with the growth of Atlantic salmon farming. Norway and Chile developed industrial-scale operations for these fish. Consequently, the global salmon market became flooded with farmed products.
Economic Struggles for Small-Boat Fishers
This influx of farmed salmon dramatically changed our fortunes. Small-boat salmon fishermen suddenly found themselves in a tough spot. We had to bargain for mere pennies per pound. Now, forty years later, the situation remains challenging. It is unfortunately not uncommon for us to receive a base price. This price is often less than a dollar per pound, with no inflation adjustment.

Industrial-scale finfish aquaculture has deeply harmed fishing families. Despite this clear negative impact, efforts to expand it continue.
